I was pleasantly surprised by Princess Peach: Showtime, and the aforementioned unpredictability is a huge reason why it will likely remain in my permanent rotation of Mario games going forward. I’d love to see Nintendo give more mascots a showcase like this, with a similar go-for-broke variety format. Keep ’em coming!

In truth, little here will provide meaningful challenge for experienced players, and there’s also little expectation that Showtime will win any awards for its innovation. However, I found it impossible not to be charmed by Princess Peach’s package—the transformations, the wonderful animation, and the fun, cinematic flair on every kung fu kick and perfectly baked cake.
It’s a simply wholesome experience stuffed full of variety and simple-but-fun mechanics. Showtime likely won’t be as fondly remembered as Nintendo’s biggest hitters, but it does finally give Princess Peach the charismatic starring role she deserves. At the very least, that’s worth celebrating.
Full of personality and variety, Princess Peach Showtime delivers a performance that’s better than the sum of its parts, with some shallow mechanics lost in the glitz of its cabaret show. The challenge is definitely geared towards youngsters, but even experienced players will find it difficult not to be charmed.
Pros
- Peach's best game yet
- Tons of charm and variety
- Wonderful animation
- Generous number of secrets to discover
Cons
- Little challenge for experienced players
- Technically unimpressive visuals

Conclusion
Princess Peach: Showtime! sees Nintendo finally give everyone's favourite imaginary princess the rollicking adventure she deserves. We had expected a rather throwaway offering here, a bunch of minigames and Mario-lite platforming maybe, but what we've got is one of the better kid-focused games on Switch. There's creativity, style, and fun to spare here, with levels packed full of secrets, cool outfits, and enough new mechanics to ensure nothing ever outstays its welcome. Come for the fashion, stay for the boss battles, slo-mo bullet dodges, and cardboard horse chases. Besides a few niggling performance issues, this is Nintendo on rather cracking form. Encore!
Joys
- Looks and sounds great with levels packed full of colour and fun
- Tons of variety in controls and gameplay from moment to moment
- Manages to combine accessibility for young gamers with some proper excitement
- Plenty of secrets, collectibles, and unlockable outfits to seek out
- Some surprisingly good bosses
Cons
- Frame rate issues here and there
- Resolution drops can be noticeable at points

Princess Peach: Showtime! allows Peach to wear whatever she feels like. She can sing, or swim. She can fight through stealth, or brute force. All of Showtime!'s variation and tenderness stops it from ever becoming a boring "girlboss" game - Peach wants, more than anything, to save the plucky Theets from harm, and protect the sanctity of their theater. Showtime! never tries to manufacture some artificial connection to manhood and its associates: domination, coarseness, cruelty. Women are not worms. They're limitless. Some of them have wet, wide eyes and smooth swatches of silk, and it's not embarrassing or childish - it's the product of soft, eloquent desire.
Princess Peach has always had this sentimentality, and a wish to be a benevolent leader, so Showtime! is feminine by necessity. Outside of the castle, there's more space to be gentle. "There was / a peach in a wicker basket / There was a bowl of fruit," writes Louise Glück in the 2001 poem "Ripe Peach." "Fifty years. Such a long walk / from the door to the table." Finally, Peach gets to rule.

Princess Peach: Showtime could be a decent first game for young Peach fans, but longtime Nintendo players looking for the Princess’ equivalent of a quality Kirby platformer will likely be underwhelmed. Stylistically, however, the game is a success and, in typical Nintendo fashion, features an exciting finale. I just wish the difficulty had been more balanced in one direction or the other.

Verdict
Princess Peach: Showtime! is more closely aligned with Kirby and Yoshi’s simple, cheery romps rather than Mario’s polished platformers and Luigi’s haunted mansions. There’s fun to be found in the Sparkle Theater, as these delightfully simplified takes on some of gaming’s most popular genres are entertaining to blast through, and the whimsical stage play aesthetic gives Peach’s game an identity all its own. I’m also thrilled that Nintendo is finally giving Peach another crack at her own solo outing after nearly two decades, and I hope this is the start of an ongoing spinoff series within the wider Mario universe. Some noticeable performance issues and the frustrating lack of a chapter select means I won’t be returning for an encore, and I wish there were a few extra levels to lengthen the somewhat brief campaign, but Nintendo and Princess Peach at least know how to put on a good show.

Princess Peach Showtime is a friendly, inviting game that's made to be easy to digest. Some of the genres work better than others in this format, but none of them are too tricky or off-putting, and most of it will come down to personal taste. None of these stages are fleshed out enough to support their own game, but they're an invitation for novice gamers to explore a bunch of different game types, with a charming (and apparently polymath) princess offering her gloved hand to welcome them in.
The Good
- Loads of variety serves as a gentle, flexible introduction to myriad genres
- Visual design shows neat touches of stagecraft, especially in the boss designs
- Individual plays have fun story touches and funny villains
The Bad
- Lethargic pacing may turn off more experienced gamers
- Detective stages are a particular weak spot, with too-simple mysteries and slow pacing
- The overarching villain, Grape, is underdeveloped

Princess Peach: Showtime is ultimately a stage show, and it's limited by design. That's not a bad thing, necessarily, but it does mean the heights it can reach are limited by the length of the curtains it's drawn back. In days gone by, Showtime would've been a perfect weekend rental for the GameCube. Showtime is completely entertaining from top to bottom, but while it has enough variety to avoid ever becoming boring, it doesn't have the depth for much lasting appeal.
But hey, in a world where video games are demanding more and more of my time and energy, there's something to be said for an experience that cuts the filler to deliver polished charm in spades. Princess Peach: Showtime may not be an all-encompassing production, but the entire troupe has given its all to make sure the crowd goes home happy.

Ideal para principiantes o niños pequeños. Presentación exquisita. Transformaciones variadas y cambios de ritmo. Honra la magia del teatro. Luz y animación. Peaches, Peaches como nunca antes.
Algunos niveles mediocres o repetitivos. Rendimiento pobre, sobre todo en portátil. Los hilos tiran demasiado.
