It's been too long since we had a new Shinobi game, but Art of Vengeance has been more than worth the wait. With tremendous visuals, an exceptional soundtrack and a compelling combat system that makes each fight a delight, this elevates Sega's action platformer to new heights in the same way Lizardcube previously did with Streets of Rage 4. Exceptional.
Fantastically detailed sprites and backgrounds
Soundtrack is an absolute banger
Combat feels brilliantly satisfying to execute
Assist aids for players struggling with difficulty
The map can be fiddly to navigate when clearing things up

As if playing like a dream wasn’t enough, Shinobi: Art of Vengeance also feels like a complete package thanks to its Metroidvania-esque structure. Every level has a ton of collectables, secrets, and optional enemy encounters that can be discovered on revisits once you’ve unlocked the right Ningi, which adds a lot more to the otherwise fairly brief ten-hour campaign.
It never feels like padding, either. 100 percenting each level is a joy and offers some of the greatest platforming moments in the series, and tests of skill that surpass anything else in the game. Beyond the additional skins and challenge rooms, there’s also an arcade mode for hardcore players to cut their teeth on and aim for the highest rank. Even after 15 hours and nearly everything done, I can’t see myself putting it down any time soon.
I’ve had my doubts about Sega’s reboot plans in the past (looking at you, Crazy Taxi), but Shinobi: Art of Vengeance is a home run on the first pitch. It’s one of the most gorgeous, creative, and satisfying games of 2025 and has effortlessly clawed its way to becoming my frontrunner for Game of the Year. No pressure, Ninja Gaiden 4…
Pros & Cons
Gorgeous hand-drawn art style and killer soundtrack.
Brutal, creative, and satisfying combat.
Some of the tightest and most challenging platforming of this generation.
Challenge is a welcome surprise, but be prepared to rage

Conclusion: A Masterful Return for Shinobi
It should always be lauded when a classic series is brought back in peak form, and Shinobi: Art of Vengeance is an ideal representation of that notion. Between masterfully woven 2D platforming and action combat that leverages the extraordinary movement in place, alongside commendable optional challenges, there’s no shortage of meticulous quality for platforming enthusiasts to appreciate. If Shinobi: Art of Vengeance is indicative of the caliber we can anticipate from Sega’s incoming classic revivals, then I believe it’s fair to say that we’re in more than good hands.
The Good
- Fluid, Responsive Movement — Air dash, grappling hook, glider, and wall jumps all feel smooth and natural.
- Well-Designed Enemies & Bosses — Distinct attack patterns, armor mechanics, and fair difficulty escalation.
- Striking Art Style — Gorgeous hand-drawn visuals create a unique, modern identity for the series.
- Variety in Stage Design — Levels offer different aesthetics and unique gameplay challenges.
- Engaging Combat Depth — Combos, kunai, special abilities, and executions keep battles fresh.
The Bad
- Arcade Mode Feels Repetitive — Replays existing stages with scoring, offering limited fresh content.

Though I only obtained 100-percent completion on a few stages during my first playthrough, I’m excited to return to these sprawling levels with my expanded ability suite to grab more rewards and complete more scenarios. I appreciate how massive and well-designed the stages are, flawlessly hinting at where you should go next. However, they’re so long that they sometimes overstay their welcome, which eliminates the urge I often feel with quicker-hit action games of “just one more level.” Still, any gripes I have about Art of Vengeance are relatively minor in the grand scheme of this excellent experience.
Each time I sat down to play, I met each obstacle with an eagerness to see what it would throw at me next, and I was rarely disappointed. This is Lizardcube’s finest work to date, and it further excites me for the rest of the dormant-franchise revivals Sega has planned. Shinobi: Art of Vengeance should serve as a blueprint for delivering a retro-facing experience of an absentee franchise while still leveraging modern technology and game design conventions.

Mucho contenido, secretos y rejugabilidad.
Visualmente espectacular.
Puntos negativos

Off the back of 2017’s Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap and 2020’s Streets of Rage 4, developer Lizardcube had already proven itself to be a safe pair of hands when it comes to resurrecting classic Sega series’, and Shinobi: Art of Vengeance has only further cemented its reputation as a studio capable of making everything old feel new again. This is a genuinely engaging 2D action platformer, beautiful to behold and even better to play. It’s blessed with a combat system that expands in an invigorating way, as well as a healthy amount of secret side objectives that offer some serious optional challenges outside of the main story path. Like a ninja strapped onto a surfboard, Shinobi: Art of Vengeance is eyecatching, deadly, and totally rad as hell.
