Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds fires on all cylinders with a fantastic roster of 24 of my favorite hedgehogs, foxes, echidnas, and more. The lineup of 24 main tracks and 15 Crossworld tracks is the best designed selection we've ever gotten in any Sonic racing game, and there is a generationally great soundtrack to accompany them. The racing itself feels fast, fantastic, and intuitive, with lots of options to tweak your stats to your preferred playstyle. There are plenty of modes that entertained my friends and me for hours, and CrossWorlds will probably be a regular staple of hangouts as more courses and characters are added over the coming months – though I do wish it had the option for splitscreen when playing online. The titular Crossworld mechanic is an awesome idea that keeps each race fresh, and a great way to potentially turn the tables on opponents thanks to a lengthy list of customization options. While I'm still speeding my way to complete all the challenges, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is one that I know I'll enjoy playing plenty more of in the months to come, crossing the finish line as my new favorite kart racing game of all time.

While I may have been left a little wanting when it comes to what CrossWorlds doesn’t do, everything it doesdo is tweaked to perfection. This latest generation proves that the Blue Blur is back in the big leagues, finally giving him the fantastic racing game he’s always deserved. With Sonic’s resurgence going strong, CrossWorlds is a well-earned victory lap.
Pros & Cons
Fantastic, effortless racing mechanics
The gadget system is versatile and well implemented
Some of the most gorgeous visuals of the Sonic series
Banger soundtrack - as always
DLC characters are unvoiced and underwhelming
Could have done with a story mode

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds offers some exciting twists on the tried-and-true kart-racing formula, making for a streamlined experience that wastes no time getting you into the action. Though there’s substantially less content and replayability than its primary contemporary, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is concise and effective in its mission, offering the most well-rounded kart racer of the year.

From a technical standpoint, the game runs perfectly on the base PS5, without any slowdown or noticeable draw-in, resulting in a very good-looking game. It isn't always beautiful, however, with some of the art style looking a bit naff, and it arguably doesn't look as good as Mario Kart World overall, even with the extra power of PS5. Nor is it as obviously wonderful as Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, which is essentially a Sonic version of OutRun 2, so you might want to try before you buy. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is good, but before more content is added it's harder to recommend the high entry price.
Inflation aside, this is a very playable, well-designed racer that should only get better with time. It's not quite as convincing as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe or Mario Kart World, nor as polished and over-the-top as Disney Speedstorm, though at least this one isn't obsessed with loot and microtransactions. It's just as Sonic himself would declare after a celebratory bit of breakdancing and a flip before freezing his pose in place: "Yeah, not bad."

That’s a long-term problem, however. For now, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is a brilliant alternative to Mario Kart World. If you don’t have a Switch 2 but like your karting games, it’s absolutely worth getting, because it’s easily the best modern karting game on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
If you are a Nintendo-owning karting fan and you currently have a Switch, performance aside – this review is for the PS5 version so I can’t speak to how it runs on Switch yet – it’s still not quite better than Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, so it’s mainly worth looking into if you want a change of scenery, once you’re satisfied it runs well enough on Nintendo’s aging handheld.
If you have a Switch 2, where the story is different because of how much Mario Kart World diverts from tradition, hold fire and see how the game performs when it eventually makes its way to Nintendo’s latest console (it’s coming in “holiday 2025”, according to Sega). This could just be a serious contender depending on what you’re personally looking for in a karting game.
Brilliant arcade-style handling with hugely gratifying powerslides
Portal mechanic is a fun way to make races less predictable
A large character roster with loads of crossover characters on the way
Exclusive unlockables make Time Trial and Race Park worth playing too
Friendships mode will have you unlocking new content for ages
Weapons aren't as satisfying to land as we'd like
Will get quite grindy if new features aren't added to keep things interesting
James from Busted should never be allowed to record a game's theme song again

Puntos positivos
Divertido y sin un segundo de respiro.
Miles de combinaciones de personajes, vehículos personalizables y artilugios.
Unas partidas imprevisibles y caóticas..
Puntos negativos
... a veces, demasiado caóticas.

In summary, Sonic Racing: Crossworlds is a good game that has something for everyone. But it also has its obvious problems that will be difficult for the developers to correct in retrospect. I appreciate that Sega is willing to invest in the game and really embrace the concept of cross-fertilizing different worlds, as we can soon welcome Aang from Avatar: The Last Airbender, Joker from Persona 5, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (to name a few). I'm sure I haven't burned enough rubber yet, but I plan to head out on the multidimensional roads right away.
+
Great character roster, lovelly music, changing of worlds is superb, loads of nostalgia, fun and charming design
-
Story mode is missing, the focus of modding your vehicle is too great, some boring tracks

Altogether, Sonic Racing CrossWorlds is a solid package. The single-player modes, meta-goals like collecting gear and vehicle parts, and wealth of customization options to experiment with different play styles, make it easy to recommend for players who like their kart racing with a little more mechanical complexity. Even with slightly underwhelming online offerings, it's easy to see how Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds has plenty of road ahead of it.
The Good
- Portal-hopping to new CrossWorlds adds variety and lets you spot neat homages
- Massive amount of playstyle customization with both vehicles and gear
- Race Park is a cool team-based twist that adds bonus objectives
The Bad
- Bumping into walls feels extremely unforgiving
- Too many attack items with very few hard counters
- Rivals system can sometimes make races feel effectively 1v1
- Online play is very basic with few options
